Hillclimb / Sprint

About Hillclimb / Sprint

A Hillclimb/Sprint is an extremely exciting event usually run on a closed section of public road where each competitor is timed to the nearest 100th of a second to see who is fastest over the course. The course is a challenging piece of road often with hairpin bends, flowing turns and road junctions all alongside the usual walls, hedges and trees we all see on our daily journeys. These courses are typically over a kilometer long and there are many classes of cars competing catering for everything from pretty standard Fiat Cinquecento’s alongside your Classic cars like Ford Escorts and Pre 1955 cars all the way through to your specialist Single seater Hillclimb machinery like the Radical SR8 and the Judd engined Gould with nearly everything else in between.

Competing cars need to meet Motorsport Ireland safety standards including roll cages and fire extinguishers and the drivers must be medically approved and have the relevant safety equipment in order to compete.

Hillclimbs are run all over the country normally from April through to September and there is a great sense of community amongst the competitors.

A Sprint is referred to by the competitors as a “Flat Hillclimb”

MEC runs it’s hillclimb/sprint in August (normally) over a challenging course in north County Dublin. We are always looking for assistance running the event as this means building a course on public roads. So, if you feel like getting involved we would be delighted to avail of your assistance.
